Grunge Design – Sophomores
"What's this noise all about anyway?"
Ray Gun was an American alternative rock-and-roll magazine, first published in 1992 in Santa Monica, California. Led by founding art director David Carson, Ray Gun explored experimental magazine typographic design. The result was a chaotic, bold, daring, and abstract style, that was not always readable, but distinctive in appearance.
Design educator and historian Ellen Lupton said after the release of Carson's book Trek,
"David Carson continues to be one of the world's most distinctive typographic voices—much imitated, but never matched."
Students were asked to design magazine spreads for a personality or musician of their choice using non-traditional design methodologies.
