Grunge Design – Sophomores

"What's this noise all about anyway?" Ray Gun was an American alternative rock-and-roll magazine , first published in 1992 in Santa Monica, California . Led by founding art director David Carson , Ray Gun explored experimental magazine typographic design. The result was a chaotic, bold, daring, and abstract style, that was not always readable, but distinctive in appearance. Design educator and historian Ellen Lupton said after the release of Carson's book Trek , "David Carson continues to be one of the world's most distinctive typographic voices—much imitated, but never matched." Students were asked to design magazine spreads for a personality or musician of their choice using non-traditional design methodologies. Multimedia Communications. Eat. Sleep. Create.
